Hard Candy Review

March 14th 2011 06:19

This is actually a movie I've reviewed before, but never for this blog. It's such a great movie, I felt it deserved to be revisited and talked about.

Name of DVD: "Hard Candy"
Genre: Drama / Thriller
Directed by: David Slade

Written by: Brian Nelson
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Ellen Page, Sandra Oh, Jennifer Holmes
Rated: R
Original Release Date: April 14, 2006
DVD Release Date: Sept. 19, 2006
Studio: LionsGate

Movie Tag Line: “Strangers shouldn't talk to little girls.”

Overview:

"Hard Candy" is a sensational, psychological thriller; dealing with the horrors of online dating and its predatory aspect. It will make you think twice about hooking up with anyone via the Internet!

My Thoughts:

This movie definitely shows what can happen when Internet dating goes wrong!

Teenager Hayley Stark (Ellen Page) chats online for several weeks with an older man Jeff (Patrick Wilson) – she’s 14 and he’s 32. They finally decide to meet in person and end up going back to Jeff’s place, where things go the complete opposite of what one would normally predict.

Jeff seems to be the pedophilic type, but viewers are not really given specific details of any thing he’s actually done in the past. Hayley turns out to be one scary teenage girl who decides to invoke her predatory instincts instead of becoming the targeted victim. I found myself cringing (which is pretty rare for me) at some of Hayley’s disturbing thoughts and actions while trying to teach Jeff a hard lesson. This was a very powerful film that I certainly will never forget.

“Hard Candy’s” storyline was about as intense as they get – it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! Actress Ellen Page ("Juno" and "Super") is so believable in her role as teenage Hayley.

I would not recommend this movie for a first date. I would have liked to have learned more in depth details about the characters, their lives, and their actual life experiences. The outcome of the movie (what happens to Jeff) was a bit predictable to me.
