Movie Review of Hard Candy
September 28th 2009 03:18
Hard Candy is a sensational, psychological thriller; dealing with the horrors of online dating and its predatory aspect. It will make you think twice about hooking up with anyone via the internet!
Pros:
Distinctive film shots with close ups and gray washout
Intense storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat, start to finish.
Cons:
Definitely not a good first date movie
Would have liked to have learned more in depth details about the characters, their lives, and actual experiences.
The outcome of the movie (what happens to Jeff) was a bit predictable to me.
This movie is definitely internet dating gone wrong! Teenager Hayley Stark chats online for several weeks with an older man Jeff (she’s 14, he’s 34). They finally decide to meet in person, go back to Jeff’s place, and things go the complete opposite of what one would normally predict.
Jeff seems to be the pedophilic type, but they don’t really give specific details of any thing he’s done or of his guilt. Hayley is the scariest form of a teenage girl becoming the predator instead of the intended victim. I found myself cringing (rare for me) at some of Hayley’s disturbing thoughts and actions while trying to teach Jeff a hard lesson. Very powerful film that I certainly will never forget.
