Review: WAITING... (2005)

December 8th 2008 22:06

Waiting... - 7/10

Rob McKittrick's comedy about a group of friends who work at a restaurant delivers more laughs than a movie has in a long time.

Welcome to Shenaniganz, where your food is always fresh and the staff are always friendly...sort of. Waiting is the story of a group of employees just going on with their lives as they deal with the stupid, boring, and sometimes inane aspects of their job. It gives us an insight to a few of the main characters, letting us know their back stories and presents us with a cast of characters who are all different and unique in their own way. There's Monty (Ryan Reynolds), the guy who is too old to still be working as a waiter but doesn't give a shit. There's Dean (Justin Long), the 20-something kid that has not done a lot with his life since graduating high school and constantly questions himself about where he's going and what he's going to do with his life. There's Mitch (John Francis Daley) who just started working on the day the film takes place and is trying to figure just what the hell all these employees are really about and whether or not the job is worth all the shit that actually goes on. Mixed in with all these characters is a supporting cast that only adds the the hilarity, like Raddimus (Luis Guzman) and Floyd (Dane Cook) who spend the majority of their time playing the penis-showing game (way too much to try and explain) along with the other co-workers.

Having worked in multiple restaurants before, I could totally relate with this film, in the sense that when you are a waiter/waitress the people you work with become like a family and there is nothing you'd love to do more than fuck with all the asshole customers. Sure, this movie is a bit childish and immature, but it has that kind of humor to it that you know the filmmakers aren't trying to pan this stuff off as real. It's just a funny, kinda pointless comedy that feels like the younger, not so witty brother of Clerks..

It's a great time and definitely worth a watch if you're in need of a film that doesn't require much thinking and in need of a laugh.
